Mesoporous bioactive glasses with metallic ion and biomolecule releasing capability

Betreuer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

The aim of this research is to develop multifunctional mesoporous bioactive glass vehicles as therapeutic carriers of biologically active ions and biomolecules for bone regeneration applications. Such highly ordered mesoporous bioactive glass particles will be made by a template guided approach. 3D printing and form replica method will be used to fabricate 3D scaffolds of different pore architecture which will be functionalised by mesoporous particles following previous approaches developed at the Erlangen Institute of Biomaterials [1]. The novel materials will be fully characterized in order to assess its suitability for bone regeneration applications, including microstructural characterisation, testing of mechanical properties, assessment of drug release kinetics, and determination of cytocompatibility.
