Bioactive glass scaffolds are investigated for bone tissue engineering, as they have great characteristics to stimulate bone regeneration. They are biodegradable, cytocompatible, promote cell adhesion, stimulate osteogenesis and form a strong bond with bone [1]. In this project, we produce scaffolds using 45S5 bioactive glass microparticles by foam replication method [2]. Moreover, these scaffolds will be coated by mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNPs), synthesized by the micro-emulsion technique based on the Sol-Gel method [3]. In addition, we will incorporate biologically active ions [4] [5] into the MBGNPs, to endow them with biological multifunctionality like antioxidant, angiogenic, antibacterial properties. The characterization of the new materials will involve mechanical properties, surface properties and in vitro bioactivity studies.
