Fibrous structures based on biopolymers and biologically active ion doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles for tissue engineering applications: development and characterization

Supervisors: Prof. Dušan Galusek (FunGlass), Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Susanta Sengupta is PhD student in the framework of the EU-funded (H2020) project FunGlass (Centre for Functional and Surface Functionalized Glass) based at Alexander Dubcek University of Trencin. He started his training period in September 2019 at the Institute of Biomaterials (FAU). The research activities of Mr. Sengupta are focused on the preparation and characterization of fibrous composite scaffolds incorporated with mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) doped with therapeutic ions (Cu and B) for soft tissue regeneration. The project follows previous collaborative research between FunGlass Center and our Institute [1].

The project work is divided into two sections: i. Preparation and characterization of therapeutic ion doped (Cu, B) mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) by emulsion based sol gel method, and ii. Preparation and characterization of MBGNs incorporated 3D fibrous scaffolds followed by cytocompatibility assessment. The goal of the study is to consider different parameters affecting cell attachment and proliferation such as fiber roughness, surface topography and synergic effects of therapeutic ions.
