Ag-containing bioactive glass added PEEK coatings by electrophoretic deposition

With increasing drug (antibiotic) resistance, infections are a pressing and growing issue
in medicine, particularly in operations involving implants. Silver, being highly toxic to microorganisms, but
having a relatively low toxicity to human tissue, could solve this
issue. The main object of this research is to create multifunctional
coatings combining Ag doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles
(MBGNs)and PEEK on metals. Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) will be used as
a coating technique to create layers of a high microstructural homogeneity while
controlling the thickness of the coating [1, 2]. The coatings will be
compared to previously developed Radio Frequency (RF) sputtered AG/SiO2 layers on BG/PEEK
coatings [2] in terms of antibacterial behavior, cytotoxicity and
bioactivity.
