Essential oil containing chitosan based bioactive coatings

The general objective of this research is to generate a bioactive and antibacterial coating system onto permanent titanium alloy implants. The coating system is composed of an electrophoretically deposited chitosan layer with mesoporous silica-calcia-phosphorous based nanoparticles doped with essential oils and/or gentamicin, for bioactive and antibacterial improvement of the metallic surface. The used essential oil and chitosan are synthetized using Argentinian components.
This project is funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation with a Renewal Research Fellowship for Prof. Ballarre.
