Antibacterial and bioactive properties of ion doped bioactive glass nanoparticle/chitosan/gelatin coatings on PEEK/bioactive glass layers by electrophoretic deposition

In relation to the increasing number of orthopedic implants, the total number of failures due to inflammation and bacterial colonization is ascending and in future further increase is foreseeable. To prevent bacterial adhesion, implants can be coated with antibiotics or other antibacterial agents, including bioactive glasses with the capability to release biologically active ions . The main object of this research is to optimize ion-doped nano-sized bioactive glass containing coatings based on chitosan/gelatin layers for antibacterial behavior via electrophoretic deposition (EPD) [2, 3]. To evaluate the behaviour of the novel coatings in biological environments, antibacterial and cell culture studies will be performed. The results will be compared with those obtained with antibiotic loaded chitosan/gelatin coatings.
