Development and characterization of zein/poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) based electrospun fiber mats for cardiac tissue engineering

Myocardial infarction and its consequences are the major causes of cardiovascular disease. The disorder of cardiac function following a myocardial infarction is due to the loss of cardiac cells since the myocardial tissue has only a limited regeneration capacity. A promising idea in the field of Cardiac Tissue Engineering is the use of a cardiac patch .
In this project, electrospun fiber mats are made from a combination of natural polymers, poly (glycerol sebacate) (PGS) , and a conductive polymer.To improve the biological performance of the patch, the fiber mats are made electrically conductive. The morphology as well as the chemical, electrical and mechanical properties of the fiber mats will be investigated.
