Development of hydrogel-inorganic filler (nano)composites for biofabrication

Bioplotting is a biofabrication technique that enables the production of cell loaded three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. A significant challenge of this technique is the development of suitable biomaterials for the plotting process (bioinks) which need to have biodegradable and bioactive characteristics and should also withstand the mechanical loads likely to be relevant in the anticipated in vivo conditions. A recent review paper has shown that hydrogel-based composites can exhibit superior properties when incorporated with suitable nanoparticle inorganic materials [1]. This project will investigate the combination of hydrogels and inorganic fillers for biofabrication with focus on the complex interactions between the hydrogel matrix, the (nano)particle fillers and cells in the resultant scaffolds.
