Electrophoretic deposition and characterization of functional coatings on 316L stainless steel
Supervisors: Dr.-Ing. Zoya Hadzhieva, Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini
This project uses electrophoretic deposition (EPD) [1] for creating antibacterial and bioactive coatings based on chitosan deposited on medical-grade 316L stainless steel. The work considers composite and multilayer systems, where chitosan is combined with nanoparticles, loaded with phytotherapeutic drugs. The aim of the structure is to provide either direct antibacterial contact or a slow release of active substances, which would improve the functionality of the coatings compared to simple one-layer coatings. The multicomponent coatings will be studied in terms of their surface structure, adhesion, wettability, antibacterial activity, and in vitro cytocompatibility.
