Title: Development of collagen/bioactive glass composite scaffolds for periodontal tissue regeneration

Betreuer: Dr. Kai Zheng, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Collagen-based materials have been clinically used as GTR/GBR membranes for periodontal regeneration [1]. However, collagen-based membranes still suffer from insufficient mechanical strength and the ingrowth of gingival fibroblasts. Bioactive glass nanoparticles (BGN) are promising fillers promoting tissue regeneration and osseointegration in dental applications due to their bone bonding ability, osteogenic and antimicrobial activities [2]. The main objective of this research is to develop double-layer collagen/BG scaffolds as physical barriers for preventing the growth of epithelial tissues into defects as well as facilitating periodontal tissue regeneration. This project involves the fabrication, characterization and biocompatibility evaluation of novel collagen/BGN composite scaffolds for periodontal tissue regeneration. The influence of bioactive glass nanoparticles incorporation on the morphology, microstructure and degradation of collagen scaffold will also be investigated
