Bioinspired Ceramic Reinforced Polymer Matrix Hierarchical Coatings by Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD)

Natural materials‘ mechanical features are superior to those of their components, resulting from hierarchical stacking of their building blocks. This project focuses on fabricating bioinspired coatings by EPD to mimic natural materials‘ brick and mortar microstructure. For this purpose, we will first synthesize the ceramic particles with controlled morphology. The microstructure of the coating will be tuned by the unique shaped particles. Then, we will utilize EPD for co-deposition of the particles with bio-polymer molecules. The aim is to stack composite layers with a micro-design of sequential repetition of the particles and molecular chains. We will finally investigate the mechanical and biological performance of the coatings. This project is funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).
