3D bioactive glass/polymer composite platforms for immunomodulated bone regeneration

Supervisors: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini, Prof. Harrie Weinans (UMC Utrecht)

Bone loss is a common result of fracture, osteoporosis, and tumor removal. Regenerative medicine as a new approach focuses on regenerating the lost tissue using 3D biodegradable scaffolds to mimic the original tissue. The main aim of this project is to modulate immune cells using biomaterials to maximize bone density and prevent progressive inflammation and pain after implantation. During this collaborative project with Prof. Harrie Weinans‘ group at UMC Utrecht, the Netherlands, the impact of released biologically active ions and drugs from tailored composite scaffolds on the phenotype of immune cells, inflammation, and osteogenesis will be studied.
