Mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) have aroused great interest in the past few years due to their characteristics of extended porosity and high surface area, making them rather ideal platforms for controlled drug delivery and tissue regeneration [1]. A majority of work has been hereto performed on silicate-based MBGs. However, relatively slow and incomplete dissolution of silicate-based MBGs may limit applications where a fast release of active ions is required [2]. MBGs based on other network forming oxides (phosphates, borates) are thus drawning increasing attention [3]. The main aim of this research is to synthesize and characterize non-silicate MBGs (borate, phosphate or their combination) with novel compositions for biomedical applications.
