Bioactive glass scaffolds coated with biopolymers for bone tissue engineering

Betreuer: Qaisar Nawaz, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Aldo R. Boccaccini

The goal of this project is the fabrication of bioactive glass (45S5 BG composition) scaffolds and their coating and infiltration by biodegradable polymers with and without bioactive nanoparticles. The foam replica method [1] will be used for scaffold fabrication. Dip coating will be applied to coat and infiltrate the scaffolds with polymers of different degradation behaviour [2]. Scaffolds will be characterized in terms of  bioactivity, mechanical strength and morphology. Scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and XRD will be used. The effect of different polymers and polymer-nanoparticle composite layers on the key properties of the scaffolds will be assessed.
