Use of Si3N4 particles to reinforce and coat bioactive glass scaffolds

Collaborator: Prof. Aldo R. Boccaccini

Since the use of bioactive glasses as biomaterial is known to offer advantages over metals and oxides, studies are ongoing to further improve the biocompatibility and mechanical properties of these materials. Silicon nitride has excellent mechanical and biological performance in particular it has been reported that silicon nitride can have antibacterial effect and can exhibit osseointegration. In this project, as a strategy, Si3N4 particles were considered as a ceramic material that could provide extra properties to bioactive glasses simultaneously. Production of Si3N4 reinforced glass scaffold composites will be carried out. In addition, Si3N4 (nano)particles will be used to coat the composite scaffold by using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) in order to enhance the mechanical and biological performance. The project is supported by a Turkish Government Fellowship through TUBITAK under the program of 2219.
