Bioactive glass coatings by electrophoretic deposition (EPD)

There is a continuous need for biomedical materials for tissue substitution and repair which should not be rejected to immune response or infection. One of the most promising options is to coat implants by using biologically active layers. Within the group of such coatings for contact with bone tissue, bioactive glasses (BGs) represent a relevant system given their ability to strongly bond to bone tissue. One of the most promising room temperature techniques to obtain BG-based coatings is electrophoretic deposition (EPD) [1]. The aim of this project is the synthesis of novel composite coatings based on biopolymers and BG particles (obtained by sol-gel method) using EPD, given special attention to the coating properties and the correlation between EPD processing parameters and coating properties.
