Fatih Erdem Baştan is working as an Assistant Professor at the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department, Sakarya University (SAU), Türkiye, and group leader of the junior research group “Biomaterials and Coatings” at Thermal Spray R&D Lab., SAU. He is an Institute of Biomaterials FAU alumni and has visited the Institute twice for ~2.5 years. He worked on electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of polymer matrix composites when he was a visiting Ph.D. student in 2016-2017 (1 year) and on the development of bioinspired nacre-like hierarchical coatings by EPD during his visiting postdoctoral period for 15 months (2022-2023) funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK).

Dr. Baştan is active in ceramic synthesis, processing, and composite coatings for biomedical applications. He established a close collaboration with the Institute of Biomaterials, FAU, and is a co-author of more than ten publications with Prof. Boccaccini. His current research focuses on developing biomedical devices, which have specific compositions, hierarchical microstructures, and targeted cell-stimulating capacity with some medical cues, by colloidal systems.
